So it feels like I just gave birth to my second born. It was only 4.5 months versus 9 months .. thankfully. But then, voila – a new website is born!
This master plan all started last Spring when my husband Tuan and I decided it was time to kick this business up a notch. After some research on website hosts and design, we were quickly overwhelmed and knew – with the caliber we envisioned – there was no way we could do it ourselves. So who did we look to? No other than the super talented Promise Tangeman of SiteHouse Designs. I mean we just went straight to the top – no messing here. Through pages and pages of homework assignments, Promise helped me discover a lot about myself. Initially my thoughts were all over the place, yet she helped me hone in and discover how to best represent myself in this crazy wide internet world, weaving in design, business practices, strengths, and personality. With the homework assignments and two days of software learning, Tuan and I were able to run with it and spend the next 8 weeks designing and redesigning and redesigning once again. Okay, so we thought we would launch in June – dreaming!
Design. This was the hardest part. We were perplexed on how to take my business cards, which are very organic modern looking – thick letterpress squares – and transfer the look and feel of them onto the website. Even using the same font on texture didn’t give it the same feel once online. So we decided to hand-watercolor the logo, photograph it and then upload it. I’ve been wanting to weave Tuan’s painting talents into the business somehow so this was the perfect start!
But then we decided that wasn’t enough. Once it was downscaled, it may be a little difficult to see the watercolor nuances. We looked through all the previous homework assignments and it became pretty prevalent that I was drawn to crafty, bright, organic, modern designs. A modern girl with vintage charms, as one font perfectly described me. But it also had to be unique. And I didn’t want something that could be created with Photoshop – it had to be handmade. So through much brainstorming, we decided on modern colorful watercolored trees! And not just 1 or 2 trees, but a whole family of them! We could then take subtle elements and tie it throughout the website. It was a crazy idea but we made it happen after multiple trips to the art store, multiple versions of trees and layouts, and many many mixing of colors. End result – I love it! Best part, we can change things up as we feel. Future surprises ….
Lastly, I must THANK all the folks who helped make this dream a reality. I am truly humbled by all the support. Without all of you, this project could have been 9 months versus 4 months. Thank you to my little wild child Ian who felt the pressure from this project because we didn’t have our normal amount of play. I promise many days ahead to make up for it! Thank you to those who helped watch Ian as we were working. Thank you to Promise, Meg Long, and Liz Grant for showing me sweet design tricks and software customization. Many thanks to those who helped review the site and gave all your valuable feedback. Most of all a huge thanks to Tuan for staying up with me through many late nights, contributing ideas, taking on all technical aspects, and of course knowing me so well to know modern watercolor trees is just what I needed. xo
So if you haven’t checked it out yet, make sure to hop over to the new website. Feel free to send a message through the ‘connect’ form, even just to say “heyyyy!”
